How to use VoiceOver to read aloud text found in the Camera viewfinder in iOS 15 on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

Short guide:

  1. Open the Camera app on your device.
  2. Choose Photo from the available camera options.
  3. If not already active, launch VoiceOver using Siri by saying, “Hey Siri, turn VoiceOver on.”
  4. When the camera detects text, VoiceOver announces “Text detected”. Navigate to, and tap, the Live Text button to select the text. The “live” text will appear on top of the viewfinder.
  5. Slide your finger down the screen to hear the text read aloud. Alternatively, if you choose Select All from the options ribbon, the text will be read aloud automatically.
  6. To return to the viewfinder, navigate to, and tap, the Live Text button again.

This section gives you step by step instructions on how to use VoiceOver to read aloud text found in the Camera viewfinder in iOS 15, with pictures of the screens to help. This article assumes you are familiar with the VoiceOver software.  If not, you can read our VoiceOver article here

Open the Camera app

1. Tap the Camera icon on your Home screen to open the Camera app.

Set the camera to take photos

2. Choose Photo from the available camera options.

Turn on VoiceOver

3. If not already active, launch VoiceOver using Siri by saying, “Hey Siri, turn VoiceOver on.”

4. When the Camera detects text, VoiceOver announces “Text detected”.

5. Navigate to, and tap, the Live Text button to select the text. The “live” text will appear on top of the viewfinder.

6. Slide your finger down the screen to hear the text read aloud. Alternatively, if you choose Select All from the options ribbon, the text will be read aloud automatically.

7. When you have finished, navigate to, and tap, the Live Text button again to return to the viewfinder.
