Terminology:
βAltβ refers to the βOptionβ key ( β₯ )
If you have enabled βUse F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keysβ under βKeyboardβ settings in βSystem Preferencesβ then omit the βFnβ key from the keyboard shortcuts shown in this article.
- Open βAccessibility Preferencesβ: Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accessibility. (See the article Open Accessibility Preferences on this website for more information.)
- In the left column of Accessibility Preferences, click on the βAudioβ item under βHearingβ or press βFnβ + βCtrlβ + βF7β (once or twice) to highlight one of the options for example βDisplayβ and then press the up or down arrow keys to select βAudioβ.

- Click the checkbox next to βFlash the screen when an alert sound occursβ or press βTabβ to highlight the checkbox and press βSpacebarβ.

- If you would like to see what a visual alert will look like when one occurs click the βTest Screen Flashβ button or press βTabβ until it is highlighted and press βSpacebarβ.
- When you are happy with your settings click the βCloseβ (red) button at the top of the βAccessibilityβ window or press βCmdβ + βWβ to close the window.
Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings are managed by someone else (an IT department or administrator for example). If this is the case you will need to contact them to access these settings or for further help.
